I have seen the videos of Persian women before the ayatollah and they sure looked different and wore different clothes. Could they have been a teensy bit freer before the ayatollah? I truly hate what Muslims do to their women and would absolutely fight against this misogynist so called religion of peace taking over our country and doing to American women what Islam has done to all the women when the Islamic state and their sharia law occupies the nation. How can anyone call Islam a religion of peace when mayhem and murder follow their apostasy wherever Muslims migrate.
Unfortunately, misogyny has been ubiquitous in many cultures, maybe especially in the "Abrahamic traditions" which especially includes Jews, Muslims, and Christians. It is not unique nor necessarily worse in Muslim countries than in the others. Even today in Orthodox Judaism, many synagogues have separate areas for women to worship, usually in balconies or in the very back of the synagogue.
When you talk about the clothing that Iranian women wore under the Shah, that merely indicates how Iran adopted Western culture under his regime. They wore clothing more like Western Europeans and Americans, whereas previously they wore clothing that one would see throughout Arabian countries and Central Asian countries such as Iran. The men also had their cultural clothing that Muslim men wore, which usually also covered their whole bodies. They had their own culture; it didn't mean they were more repressed. Today, orthodox Jewish women also cover their hair and their whole bodies from ankles to the tops of their heads when they are in public. So it's not just the Muslims who have cultural clothing preferences that seem to liberal Westerners as repressive.
Somehow you have gotten this idea that Muslims are particularly evil and have actually enslaved their women. This is not the case, any more than women have been and still are enslaved or treated poorly in the various Christian and Jewish cultures, even when they dress and outwardly look "liberated."
As far as mayhem and murder following wherever Muslims go, I will say that the Muslim countries I have visited have always been very peaceful and harmonious. These days I've been focused on the Gaza genocide and in following their writings and images of how they live, I've been particularly struck by how their men and women interact, how the women are not only universally adored but vigorously supported in their aspirations for education and work as professionals, whether in medicine or education or engineering or journalism or in the arts.... whatever they are interested in. There is virtually no sexual predation or harrassment or abuse by men against women. It's unheard of. Unlike in our "liberated" Western cultures where these crimes are widespread.

Look at the mayhem and murder that have followed wherever American "interests" have plundered and ravaged lands all over the world, following of course after the European colonialism did the same. We don't really see this tendency in Muslim history. Right now Israel is engulfed in a paroxysm of maniacal violence and destruction unparalleled in history, which the US is gleefully joining. Israel and the US are bringing extreme misery and harm to millions of people, not only in Western Asia but across the whole world. Many Muslims are the victims of this outrageous, illegal encroachment on their territories. This is the reality. I believe you are a victim of Western Empire's propaganda.
Thanks for your clarifying comment. I studied religions in college hoping to be an ambassador for peace by understanding the most sacred tenets a culture holds. My friends said religion was the cause for all wars! My professors told me to specialize in Islam for a future in academia. That wasn’t my favorite religion but one of my classmates turned Muslim after our Islam class. A mullah who spoke to our sociology and religion class tried telling us that women can’t dance because they are like a Mercedes and men are the old dodge truck and women need to be treated carefully but I told him women aren’t things and we should be free to dance if we feel like it.
Loved your response to that Mullah. Right on. Patriarchy has been culturally dominant in so many of our old religions. And your friend was right; all those religious wars. Just shows that most humans don't even know what their religions are all about; they just get attached to a religion because it is "theirs." Then they want to force others to adopt "their" religion and give up their own. Insane. The best is to ditch the religions and go to the source all religions arose from: the inner knowing of goodness, peace, justice and the oneness of all Life. This is what the mystics from all traditions knew and shared.

I spent a whole lot of time in Iran in the seventies and it wasn't that great, believe me. The Shah was a horrible despot and ruled the place with a secret police called SAVAK. I don't suppose people like the ayatollahs that much but the really didn't like the Shah.
A major factor in their dislike was that the Shah was imposed upon them by British and U.S. intelligence, who overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran in 1953 and installed the Shah.

Yes I agree about those elemental constructs at the basis of what “religion” should represent. Which is why after graduate studies in religion I’ve settled on shamanism as my path due to spirit is real and the shamans get that. To those who asked my religion after college, my response was always “eclectic.” I always wrote my research papers on the mystics of each religion we studied. As for patriarchy I did grad studies in goddesses after realizing all the “world religions” were patriarchal and as a mom of two adolescent daughter’s I became a feminist goddess scholar which also pissed people off. Yes America has tarnished her mantle by aligning with imperial despotism and despots.
