I worry about carbon markets, especially when one "market" covers a wide geographic area.
I watched California adopt a carbon market - they so wanted to be the first kid on the block with one. California does have a petroleum business. What disappointed me is that they did not disfavor the cutting of trees or the destruction of grasslands. They completely ignored the carbon sequestration provided by plants.
I've come to doubt that people living in arid areas can agree with people living in forested or grassy areas regarding carbon credits. If carbon has a natural cycle, it is specific to the vegetation in a particular region.
