Can someone please explain to me why it is better to kill all birds (even the not yet infected ones) in a poultry farm rather than to lock it down, let the bird flu kill those birds that it can and then breed from those that survive. Not many may survive at first but over time....
The same thing has been happening with H7 strains here in Australia -- which remains free of H5 N1.
In 2024, there were several farms affected (quarantine, culling) with H7N3 or H7N9 in two adjacent states, including mine, but the outbreak was declared over and the viruses eradicated in late July. Seven months later, we still have egg shortages, even though hens start laying eggs at 16—20 weeks of age.
And now two new instances (2 affected farms) have popped up in my state, involving an H7N8 strain. This will inevitably result in continued egg shortages as the state and federal governments lose their collective minds all over again.
I don’t eat meat, so I haven’t been paying attention to the availability of chicken in grocery stores. But why would a bird flu virus affect only egg production facilities and not also meat birds? It wouldn’t, so I’m thinking that chicken is probably in short supply in affected states as well.
Australia is a large country, and we produce almost all of our own food, so unaffected states could have picked up the slack. And yet we’ve still had egg shortages for months on end here.
But farming in NorCal has burgeoned. More almond trees as far as the eye can see. Knowing how much water is needed per each nut and have planted bazillions of trees!
