Nothing could astonish me at this point. The insanity of these people knows no limits. The only thing close to as extreme is the inability of most people to realize how bad it is and is getting.
As small farmers, we are constantly trying to tell people that plants have been changing through natural interbreeding or human-assisted grafting for thousands of years. It has been a survival of the fittest approach and an attempt to glean the best traits. It’s how nature and man have long worked together.
Bioengineering done with lab technology has been a recent invention but the public is somewhat complicit: they are constantly telling the farmer “we want a sweeter, smaller, firmer, longer-lasting fruit/vegetable/nut and we don’t want to pay more than we paid 20 years ago” and so the labs invoke things like CRISPR for gene editing in order to give them what they want.
Maybe we all need to be comfortable with things that aren’t perfect, sickly sweet, free from bruising and fermenting and at a price that keeps the farmer solvent.
