As small farmers, we are constantly trying to tell people that plants have been changing through natural interbreeding or human-assisted grafting for thousands of years. It has been a survival of the fittest approach and an attempt to glean the best traits. It’s how nature and man have long worked together.
Bioengineering done with lab technology has been a recent invention but the public is somewhat complicit: they are constantly telling the farmer “we want a sweeter, smaller, firmer, longer-lasting fruit/vegetable/nut and we don’t want to pay more than we paid 20 years ago” and so the labs invoke things like CRISPR for gene editing in order to give them what they want.
Maybe we all need to be comfortable with things that aren’t perfect, sickly sweet, free from bruising and fermenting and at a price that keeps the farmer solvent.
The big problem with food is it is too plentiful and too cheap to suit the Malthusian, Psychopath, Globalitarian MisAnthropists. That's a big reason they despise CO2 emissions, it causes too much food production. Food too unhealthy, well that's a plus for those guys, as sick people are easy to control and great for consuming their junk pharmaceuticals. We are 3rd gen small farmers in Northern California. The label "Organic" is full of fraud so pesticide-free is a better way to go (and less prone to govt intervention, if that's even possible these days). As to farmers' markets, we drive to San Francisco to sell. The foot traffic is often in search of entertainment (music, coffee, sampling products) far more than buying what farmers grow. Add in the high fees to cross the bridge, have a booth, park your truck, deal with violence on the streets and locals who want to barter. Then deal with the folks who run these places, who tell consumers to shop end-of-day "because farmers don't want to take home their produce. so they'll give a break on pricing," and you've got a losing proposition. But hey, it sounds nice.

So I have a vetted and ready to implement design that will serve the people, We call it the MarketSpace for the Great awakening. Once we build it, we the people will be able to propose and decide what businesses we want to build, what lands we want to buy and put in trust for new farmers, to live on and rebuild our food supply. With it, we will have the benefit of a simple way to infuse money into the businesses the great awakening wants and needs, and we will still have the benefit of our capacity to use the value we infused, by moving into an internal token common to the Alliance of the great awakening. So one question I do have is how would the farmers or other land owners pay the property taxes on their farm land and to whom if the government/banks are outside of the system you are designing? Would we have to be part of both systems? The gov one only to pay taxes and utility bills, while the other system would be for everything else? Please help me understand. Thank you. :)
