I've often wondered how differently the Govt would run if there were only a very minimal compensation framework thereof employed, instead of a a torrent of monies and power given to the players. exactly what you describe, is the mechanism with which I recently lost a 45+ yr friendship. entrenched belief systems and not wanting to accept the possibility of anything existing beyond the end of their nose, coupled with the belief that they are always be 'the smartest person in the room'... yup. my former best friend would rather assume I've been 'propagandized' for NOT believing the narrative (because dissidents are the ones dishing out the propaganda??), then give my intellect the benefit of the doubt. I'm over it. its sad, but our friendship will not recover.
Yes, lots of sadness playing out between longtime friends and family. On that note, I think my sister is getting close to disowning me simply because she's getting tired of me trying to reveal to her the downside of binary thinking. For example, I give her a scenario where persons A and B are in conflict. I can see both sides of the argument so I try to help A see B's side of the issue, and likewise with B about A's views. Since both are entrenched in binary thinking, each person thinks that since I don't agree with their side that I must be on the other person's side. Then I steel-man each person's side of the argument to them, which they love hearing, of course. But after that I try to show them I'm not against their side nor for the other side; now they're getting suspicious. And then if I try to go back and show each the other person's side they complain that I'm on that other person's side. These are actual business consulting experiences with management clients in conflict where I'd (try) to mediate their conflict. Many would stay stuck. Some would get slowly "get it" and loosen up their mental grip on their "side." Very few would go even further to the point where mutual breakthroughs would result in them standing, crying, and hugging each other.
My sister can't even HEAR the point of all these real life examples, let alone get the point. She's so stuck in defending herself that all she hears in my stories is that I'm making her wrong. God help us all.
I firmly believe that one of the hallmarks of a truly intelligent person is the ability to to change their views in light of acquiring new information.
I wish. Three of my clinical psychologist friends, good friends, are entrenched in their political views (all dems); the fourth isn't, just leans dem. Seems like they use that intelligence in very biased, belief-serving ways. It's very curious. They use it to try to convince me that any information I have couldn't be accurate since if goes against the govt's narrative; I'm amazed at how many people have this blind/unquestioning trust in the govt.
