(literally the kind of assignment I was expected to complete at the age of 10!)
I asked my son about reading classic, thought-provoking novels and he had NO idea what I was talking about. if there wasn't a movie made from it, he was clueless.
at one point I contacted teachers and ASKED for actual hardcopy textbooks; was told there were none available! NO effort was made to stop kids from doing whatever the F they wanted 'online' while they were supposed to be 'in class'. teachers just handed out assignments - there wasn't even any 'log on to zoom' sessions most of the time.
my very intelligent now-17 yr old has literally had his adult life damaged by lack of education. I would not be surprised if he NEVER gets a high school diploma. he's content with minimum wage pizza cook job. this generation is completely and totally screen-addicted. I wonder if this isn't a genetic search for "the chosen one" to take them out, and trying to preclude an appearance of a "savior". It seems they forget He said he would return in the fashion He left. We know that high school English classes certainly haven't taught these books since...what, the 70s? Not certain but seems like they stopped teaching any critical thinking in public schools for far too long. People have fulfilled the deep state dream of "when everyone believes everything they hear on TV, we've won!"

My kids read them in the last 4-5 years, one while this crap was in the headlines. That was interesting seeing the teachers teaching it while it was happening...
Every parent needs to give it to their kids now. As long as they are not too young.
There is another one, milder that our milder child read " The Giver " also a movie with Meryl Streep that I am going to watch soon. Book likely better...

the covid debacle gave me an insight into what my youngest was actually being 'taught' (if you can even call it that) in 9th & 10th grade. the remote learning I looked at was appalling in how dumbed down it was (yet my son STILL didn't manage to really pass any classes). it was tiny 'excerpts' of classic books and then grade school level multiple choice questions. (literally the kind of assignment I was expected to complete at the age of 10!)
I asked my son about reading classic, thought-provoking novels and he had NO idea what I was talking about. if there wasn't a movie made from it, he was clueless.
at one point I contacted teachers and ASKED for actual hardcopy textbooks; was told there were none available! NO effort was made to stop kids from doing whatever the F they wanted 'online' while they were supposed to be 'in class'. teachers just handed out assignments - there wasn't even any 'log on to zoom' sessions most of the time.
my very intelligent now-17 yr old has literally had his adult life damaged by lack of education. I would not be surprised if he NEVER gets a high school diploma. he's content with minimum wage pizza cook job. this generation is completely and totally screen-addicted. I predict that within 2 generations, there will be the plugged-in flesh machines ala Matrix.
I did the same about the hard copy texts books. Got the same crap so I scheduled a meeting to go in because I wanted to see them, I knew they had them, and she got them out of a locked closet and I threw a fit because it was 2 months into the semester and the texts were still locked up in a closet! I forced them to get them out because it is our money and we are paying for the teachers and books. Went to the Superintendent. No problem, again we pay their salary, we are their bosses. They gave forgotten and it is our faults because we let them forget!
I called my kids teachers at the " back to school " teachers/parents meetings Civil Servants because that is what they are and that is what they are called in DC area and that is what they signed up for. If they don't want summers off and leaving work by 3 pm they should look for another job.
yay! good on you, Freedomisnotfree! I'm surprised they even let you in the building! during the school lockout, the closest I got was when a masked and gloved art teacher came out to the parking lot to give me 'materials' for art assignments (which my son never did anyway).
I am so OVER the whole public school thing. so glad that I don't have younger kids. (my disabled son is in an adult life skills program and nobody gives me ANY shit cuz they know that I am one of the mommas who holds them to task.) IF I knew yrs ago, what I know now, I would have been homeschooling my youngest (who's technically 12th grade but no where near graduating.) I have already told my oldest (he'll be 30 in a few months,) that if he ever has children, I will be homeschooling THEM (so he better choose an 'awake' woman as their momma!)

Also most County Libraries have an online Library that you check out " electronic " books for free. Wait lists if needed also.
Better in person to take them there though.
