To be fair, the very first question in that Debate could have been the last question -- "Are Americans better off now than they were 4 years ago?" Harris avoided answering (of course, because the true answer would have ended her campaign). But TRUMP then failed to seize this huge advantage. He got side-tracked onto answering Cackler's non-answer, instead of sticking to the moderator's question. I was very surprised both by the question (which didn't fit with the obvious rigging of the rest of the debate) and by Trump's failure to TAKE this open gimme. So I'm not exactly sure how this upfront easy gift fits with the Republican-establishment-against-DJT narrative.

I doubt the RNC gets every question to approve or not. They are in a position to demand a setup that will be fair and balanced, like which media outlet, who will be the moderators, insist on at least one pro-Trump moderator, they can do that. But they don't.
As for Trump's debate skill, he has some appeal to those who seek entertainment, but I consider him a bad debater, he just doesn't get into hard facts, he rambles, doesn't prep properly, likely has a bad memory, he is old after all. I'm not that old but I find my memory ain't too good anymore.
My view is debates are better done in text, with good moderators, keeping it clean. But in that case it would end up being Trump's staff vs Kamala's staff. So I don't hold much if any value in these sort of debates.
